Four Fun Local Places to Go During Spring!

Updated: Jun 3, 2023

Spring break is coming up very soon, and students, teachers, and staff are already anticipating the period of rest from work. Some students are going on an international vacation during the break, including the participants of the upcoming high school Japan trip. However, if you do not plan to spend your break on a vacation, or need ideas ror after the break, there are still plenty of fun and interesting activities that you can enjoy locally. Please regard the following four local places that you can visit during this spring season.

Indulge in a Wild Brunch at the Calgary Zoo

The Calgary Zoo is hosting a Safari Brunch every Sunday in 2023. The brunches are held from the morning to early afternoon in Destination Africa, and can be purchased in combination with a zoo ticket. Including options such as a chocolate fountain, eggs Benedict, and Belgian waffles, this brunch provides an excellent way to enjoy zoo ambience while eating a delicious meal in preparation for an afternoon of observing fascinating animals. Themed brunches with special decorations and menus are also offered by the zoo for specific holidays. An Easter themed brunch will be held on both April 8th and April 9th. Watching animals has been expressed by some individuals to reduce stress, so visiting the zoo may help you relax before taking on the second portion of the semester.

Have a Weekend Jam at the Bell Studio

The Bell Studio offers continuous exhibitions that celebrate Canadian music and the manner in which music illustrates identity. Currently, the Bell Studio is presenting a temporary exhibition on guitars, which allows viewers to explore unique guitar models in a collection of guitars played by Canadian artists throughout history. Weekend music activities are also held by the Bell Studio, and are purposed to expose participants to different forms of music-making with hands-on experiences. These weekend events are included with admission. On March 25th, an Electric Guitar Garden will be hosted to allow individuals to hear and experiment on multiple models of electric guitars. On March 26th, the acclaimed saxophone player CK Sax will perform to celebrate musical freedom and improvisation with participants. With music providing many benefits to both physical and mental well-being, a day exploring this art may be an excellent way to spend your break, regardless of your skill level in playing music.

Experience a Dramatic Brunch with the Calgary Opera

The Calgary Opera executes stunning operatic performances, with enticing live music and masterful acting. Mr. Doyle’s Grade 11 Humanities AP class were able to view the Calgary Opera’s showcase of Carmen in November, and the Opera is now set to be hosting another production in late April. This time, the production is Macbeth, by Giuseppe Verdi, and tickets can already be purchased for the performances of this opera. However, on April 2nd, the Calgary Opera will be holding a separate Opera Brunch at the Calgary Petroleum Club for the production. The brunch is far more exclusive and intimate than the full-fledged performance, and involves a concert of the production with the cast in addition to included food, drink, and dessert options. If you are seeking more sophisticated and emotional expressions of music than the more casual settings provided by Studio Bell, then this brunch may be a great choice for you.

Relax at Home During Break

Although vacations and fun activities are an excellent way of taking advantage of the spring break, relaxation from a hectic semester can provide equally enjoyable means of spending time. Reading a book, exploring a new hobby, assisting in spring cleaning, and sleeping are great activities to do during the break, especially when the busy school semester takes away time from these activities. If you are bored during the break, you can additionally spend time with friends or family, take a nap, and observe the progression of the changing seasons. Spring break can thus allow for a needed period of rest at home before continuing on with the rest of the school year.
