WCS Eye's Backstory
By: Jerry Yuen
The Westmount Eye has a long history, dating back to before many of us were born. It originated in 2006, run by a single editor and writer, Liam Volke. Back then, it was published under a different name — “The Westmount Wire.” The newspaper used Microsoft Word, making formatting a difficult task compared to present-day. Between 2011 and approximately 2014, the journalism class was responsible for the development and distribution of the Wire. According to Ms. McCartney, this was the most interesting iteration of the paper, most likely due to the monthly releases. In 2015, the Wire stopped publishing through the journalism class due to a lack of teacher interest. An unofficial magazine, under the same name as the Westmount Eye we all know and love, began to surface in the same year. It lasted two years, before discontinuing in 2017. The current editor, Navi, was “inspired by the paper…and saw that it had been discontinued.” In 2022, she began planning the Eye. The same year, at the start of her junior year, the club began. Now, the current iteration of the newspaper is in its second year. Whether or not it continues will become evident as time passes on.
