Westmount Sports: Nothing But Net

A crowd of students gathered on the stage on Monday, February 12, and were anticipating the game between the WCS Senior Boys Basketball team and Calgary Academy. Some held up handmade posters to cheer on the Senior Boys and four mascots wearing either horse masks or skin suits that were purple or yellow hyped up the crowd even more, by throwing chocolates at them. The players were full of energy as the game began and quickly secured control of the ball. Joshua Wolfe had the ball and he seemed to have a clear shot at the net. The crowd waited with bated breath. Then, everyone goes wild as Wolfe scores a three-pointer, a great way to start off the first quarter. Despite the strong start to the game, Mr. Yae stood on the sidelines, looking more stressed than his Chemistry AP students do. The first quarter ended with Westmount ahead by 8 points and then the second quarter began. Mofe Omolade sank one of many three-pointers which prompted the other team to call a timeout. Westmount was ahead of Calgary Academy throughout the entire game and it was now down to the last 10 seconds of the third quarter and the players began counting down. As they were about to reach one, Saad Ghumman scored a final two-pointer and the stage of students shook with cheers and stomps. The Seniors Boys team ended the game that night with a score of 76-42 adding it to their numerous wins throughout the season. Likewise, the Junior Boys' Basketball team has improved throughout their season with the highlight being the win against Gobind Sarvar. Mr. Frede, the coach for the Junior Boys, mentioned how “the boys play with a lot of hustle and heart”. He enjoys coaching basketball because he “love[s] being around the game and teaching others”. Having a supportive coach who loves the sport is valuable to a team and we wish all four of Westmount’s basketball teams luck as they finish up their season.
