Westmount Sports: RIP Captain Divjot’s Ankle
Vanessa Giang and Raelene Yang
Family and friends across Canada are mourning the loss of Divjot Bhatia’s right ankle, which was broken gloriously on February 1. After school, the Senior Girls Basketball team was practicing hard for their season. The injury happened when Divjot fell onto another person’s foot while blocking the ball during a drill.
Bhatia’s ankle started the season strong and healthy on November 21, 2023. As captain of the team, Divjot had many responsibilities. She acknowledged that “those responsibilities can be difficult at times, [but] knowing the amount of trust my teammates and coach [have] in me, motivates me to do the best I can as captain”. Her ankle supported her immensely in her role and it perished the same way it started this season, in practice to lead the team to amazing success.
Div’s ankle was well-loved by many. It was crucial to a victory over Clear Water Academy, a long-time rival of Westmount Charter School. The ankle served all of its ankle duties such as facilitating walking and even more for Captain Divjot Bhatia. It was able to help her achieve her superior athletic capabilities.
During Senior Night on February 12th, Divjot’s ankle was not alone in supporting her as she walked through the large banner with crutches. As a senior on the team, Div remarked how “it’s sad knowing this is my last year to be on this team but it also allows me to enjoy the little moments that occur in the team a lot more than before”.
The ankle will be missed by the Senior Girls Basketball team and all the Westmount Wild fans. RIP Divjot’s ankle and from here at the Westmount Eye, we wish it and Div a quick recovery.
